Tretiva is utilized to treat a severe form of acne called nodular acne that has not responded to previous treatment options. Nodular acne consists of inflamed lumps that arise from excessive sebum (facial oil) production. Tretiva, a derivative of vitamin A, helps reduce sebum production and consequently protects your skin from lasting scars. This medication is classified as a retinoid.
The prescribed dosage of Tretiva will differ for each individual. Always adhere to your doctor’s recommendations and/or the instructions provided on the medication label. If your physician has advised you to take Tretiva on a consistent schedule and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take extra doses unless instructed to do so.
Taking any medication in excess can lead to serious issues. If you think you have taken too much Tretiva, contact your doctor or poison control center immediately. Symptoms of an overdose may include loss of balance, vomiting, abdominal pain, facial flushing, and headaches.
As with other medications, Tretiva may lead to some side effects. Should they occur, these side effects are usually minor and temporary. Nevertheless, some may be more severe and necessitate prompt communication with a healthcare provider or a visit to the nearest emergency room. It is important to note that side effects from Tretiva cannot be predicted. If any side effects arise or worsen, inform your doctor as soon as possible.
Tretiva can lead to birth defects, issues with bones and muscles, abdominal complications, problems with hearing and vision, difficulty swallowing, dark urine, rectal bleeding, intense heartburn, dizziness, and severe headaches. This is not an exhaustive list of all potential side effects. Always discuss with your doctor and follow their guidance carefully while taking Tretiva.
